Onion supply will boost in India by MMTC

MMTC has contracts to import 6,090 tons onion from outside this year and boost onion supply in India markets as per Union Cabinet and Consumer Affairs. It seems people get relaxed and price will go down of onion.

As you know there are many reasons have to be noticed, the rise price of onion like heavy no seasonal rainfall has locked latest onion produce in wet fields and throughout onion growing states such as in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana. These three states are major onion cultivating states in India. Not only onion but also price goes high in other food and vegetable items now these days. Here we are discussing about onion prices that is increased everywhere in the country and people really get tight to afford money to buy onion.

According to sources said, MMTC has contracted about around 6,090 tons of onion and get the consignment with Egypt will supply onion to India through Mumbai port very soon and hope this will help in down of the onion price.

According to Consumer Affairs Secretary by A K Srivastava, he holds to control with various states on demand, supply and prices for the main kitchen item. In last 15 days, our Union Cabinet decided to import 1.2 lakh tons of onions in India by improving the domestic supply and seems control prices as well. Now price touched Rs. 100 per kg earlier this month. The Union Cabinet decided about retail price of onion maybe around of Rs.70 per kg in the country.

MMTC will not sale directly that will supply onion to National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and NAFED will supply the key kitchen items in the domestic market as sources said.

As per the Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan,  production in kharif such as paddy, wheat, maize and cereals and late-kharif fall by 26% to 5.2 million tons this year,  that’s why this is putting pressure on supply and prices.

However, the main thing is farmers are affected by no seasonal rainfall and not be able to harvest their crops; vegetables and fruits so that it is affected in most parts of the country even also in Delhi and NCR retail prices crossed Rs 100/kg in these days. But from last week onion price goes to Rs. 70/- to some extent.

Why onion is important for India? Answer is next to China, India is the second-largest onion production country in the world and have 20% share in the globe in onion production only. Onion is not only for domestic consumption but also as a highest earner of foreign exchange among other fruits and vegetables.
